I was wandering the internet (as one does), when I saw a post pop up about The World Oddities Expo. It was coming to my town, and I had nothing else planned for that weekend, so I went ahead to purchase a ticket. I like weird things, and cool trinkets and artwork, so it sounded like the perfect diversion for a Saturday morning.

There were taxidermied animals everywhere. As well as tons of unique art and preserved specimens. They had a little area for preserved odd animals (like the two-headed goad and dwarf mammals), and while a little macabre, it also had a lot of signage with information on the abnormalities and the preservation process. It was a little like a Bodyworlds exhibit (if you’ve ever been to one of those), but a lot smaller in scale.

I ended up buy way more than I planned on (budget, what budget?). Some porcupine quill earrings, a ring, and my favorite purchase of the day — cherry skull earrings. I also got a couple of small terrarium domes, a resin monarch butterfly, a lot of artwork, and some cute mini 3D printed figures (otter, axolotl, and octopus). I have some display boxes on my walls now, so the minis fit perfectly there. And the artwork has gone up on the walls (I’ve created a gallery of sorts).
There is another expo like this (different company) coming in August, so I hope to go to that one to to find more treasures. My love of perusing stalls of treasures comes from my dad, I think. He likes wandering swap meets and antique stores, and I many times I followed along. Looking through everything is half the fun. And when you find something that resonates, it is even better. I also love seeing the creativity of all of the artists in fairs/expos like this.
