When you read a lot of fantasy books – especially fantasy books with fae – you quickly learn that bargains are not all that they seem. There is nuance. You have to be very careful in what you ask for, because loopholes are meaning can be bent. Manipulated, if you will.

This is an idea that permeates many stories. From the wishes made to magical creatures, to bargains made with demons, to deals made with those that live in the darker corners of the world.

Recently, I finished Oathbound, the third book in the Legendborn Cycle by Tracy Deonn. This entire series has been phenomenal so far (and there are more books to come)! We get Arthurian legend, demons, monsters, and everything is seen through the lens of race, with our lead protagonist a young black female facing far more than anyone should to save herself and her friends and family. It is an unflinching look at power and corruption and legacy and the strength that is needed to survive and find a way to thrive.
