I saw this “trend” floating around Instagram lately in the book space, and it looked like a fun bandwagon to jump on. First vs. Favorite for authors in your library/reading list. I decided to do it for authors that I had read over three books. There were over 18 in the end, so the entire list will be broken up over a few posts. In today’s first offering, the genre is fantasy-ish.

Hannah Whitten and Allison Carr Waechter are on my “auto-read” list. I have yet to read a “bad” book by either of them, they have all been 4-5 star reads for me. But these were the firsts and favorites. I highly recommend both of these authors if you like dense fantasy worlds with strong and flawed female characters.

Yes, I do love the Murderbot series an unhealthy amount. But I think Murderbot hits better as a series overall. For Martha Wells, the fantasy books hit as standalones, and have great stories that make you think (and don’t always end they way you think they will). Also, Kai in Witch King has Murderbot-style humor.
As far as Olivie Blake goes, I love her style. It is sharp and full of wit and hard truths. Masters of Death is one of my favorite book ever, not just by Olivie Blake.

Neil Gaiman is one of those authors that I either LOVE the book, or can’t get into at all. American Gods was one of those “not for me” books. But I did enjoy Stardust and Neverwhere and others. And The Ocean at the End of the Lane is dark and eerie and so damn good. Gaiman has such a wide and varied list of stories, and creates amazing characters.
