This is yet another example of a book that I loved reading, I loved maybe a little more as an audiobook. This is dual narration, but all of the narrators (Amy Hall, Ash Beverly, Alex Kydd) do such a great job of “being” each of the characters, that it completely keeps you in the story. I am an Emily Rath fan (have been since I found Whiskey & Sin last year), and the Jacksonville Rays universe is rich and diverse and full of heart and fun and all sorts of emotion. The audiobook also had the bonus feature of the “That One Night” novella that really starts the story with the first meeting of Rachel and Jake. So damn good. I listen to most audiobooks at 1.5X or 2X speed, and this one worked well in that slightly faster listen through. It also helps this monster of a book feel like it flies by, but you’re not missing any of the plot.
Goodreads Review (of the book the first time I read it): Never thought I would be a hockey romance person, but here we are. This book was a monster at over 700 pages, but it flew by. I love Rachel, Mars, Jake, and Caleb. The story gave everything time to breathe, and focused just as much on the world and the characters and relationships as much as it did the spice (and it is good spice). There was banter. There was emotion. There were terms of endearment in Finnish. I’m very much an Emily Rath fan and this series and the world of the Rays and the Prices has already become a favorite. It shows how relationships can be complicated and messy, and yet worth everything if everyone is on the same page and communicates what they want and need. And isn’t afraid of a little teamwork.
And I’m not sure if it was an Easter egg to her other novel Whiskey & Sin, but I giggled when bananas foster pancakes were mentioned early on 😉.
I highly recommend the series, and the audiobook. The second book, Pucking Wild, also has an audiobook now with Amy Hall and Alex Kydd back again, and I can’t wait to get into that one.
