Books and Cozy Chaos

To DNF or Not to DNF…

There was a time when I would power through any book I started, even if I hated it. I thought that since I started it, I had to finish it. In the last year, I have changed my stance on this completely. Life is too short to keep reading books I don’t like. Also, there are so many other books out there to give a chance to, I don’t have to cling to the one that isn’t doing it for me.

Most of the time, when I DNF it’s because either the characters do something that I do not condone personally, or the plot/pacing is SO SLOW that I keep falling out of the story. The book doesn’t have to be perfect for me to finish (I do rate a lot of books less than 3 stars, which doesn’t mean I hate them, just that they weren’t amazing, but had something in it that kept my interest enough to keep reading).

I will also DNF a book at any point. I’ve stopped at 1 chapter, and I’ve stopped almost at the end (I’m looking at you, The Stand by Stephen King…). If it’s a mood reader issue, I may try again in the future, but I don’t force myself to. When I shelve these books, I mark the as a DNF and don’t rate them (as that would not be fair in my opinion).

What are your thoughts on DNF-ing a book? Do you do it a lot, or never? And how far do you get before you call it quits?
