Books and Cozy Chaos

August Book Wrap-Up

There was a wide variety of books this month. I highlighted the 4 and 5-star reads. Divine Rivals was SO GOOD. Historical magic with vengeful gods and charmed typewriters and rivals to lovers to… we’ll see what happens because it ended on a very not-fun cliffhanger and the next book doesn’t come out until December. But I loved Iris and Roman and the whole world that was created.

And Emily Rath continues to be a favorite. Pucking Wild is the latest in the Jacksonville Rays Hockey series, and Tess and Ryan’s story is darker than Rachel and the guys in Pucking Around. But we do still see them (and get a sneak peek at the next book’s trio). I love that these books, while long, are full of story and heart and very good spice. And I wanted to throw Troy out a window.

Wild Pitch was a great sports story, in addition to the love story, and Werewolves Hate Clogs was just fun. It had snarky spirits, paranormal mafia, and a guy just trying to pretend to be a florist for a while end up having to fake a relationship with a werewolf for his safety.

A Marvelous Light was more aching and heartfelt than I was expecting. Edwin, sweet Edwin, stole my heart. His journey was everything. And it sets up the bigger mystery for the next books so well.

Lastly, Atlas Paradox… like The Atlas Six, you will either love it or hate it. I am an Olivie Blake fan. I love her writing. It is dry and sharp and detached but also explores things like fate and philosophy, and human relationships in new and absurd ways that you don’t expect.

The only book I wanted to hurl into a lake was Soul of Ash and Blood. All it did was show that ALL of the previous books could have been dual/multi-POV and they would have been so much better. And this book did not advance the plot much at all, more like held it in stasis. I will finish out the series because I have invested so much time in it, and I generally like most of the characters, but it’s becoming a bit much.
