It is technically summer break for me still. And for the last month, I have mostly been a lazy hermit. After coming back from a Memorial Day vacation to see friends and family, I really haven’t ventured out much. Or do much of anything other than read and periodically go to the gym. I’ve tried to get some prep work done (and written posts for here), but mostly I’ve just gorged on the free time I have available to read.
Now it’s time to be at least a little productive. But finding the focus needed to actually get stuff done is in short supply right now. For one, it’s like living in Hell’s sauna right now where I live, and getting motivated to leave A/C is difficult. Second, I’m trying not to spend so much money right now, so that takes out a lot of coffee and bookstore trips. The problem with that is I do my best work in coffee shops that are full of ambient noise and are most decidedly NOT home (where I get distracted by everything). Over the pandemic, I learned I am not a great work-from-home person. I need separation between home and work life.
Going to coffee shops every day is not financially viable, so I have started heading out to the local library these past couple of weeks. It is quiet (I can use my headphones), there is A/C, and I can find ample outlets to plug in my laptop. It has been a great option to get out of the house and not have to spend a ton of money to do so. The last time I went I spent a solid 4 hours getting work done. And the library is closer that my office at work, so I don’t have to commute forever to get there. I save the coffee shops for once a week, and on the other days I need to get out of the house, the library is my favorite option these days.
