In a perfect world, every book I read would be amazing and I would keep it forever. Unfortunately… that’s not how things work. I do periodically go through my bookshelves to take out books that no longer serve me to either donate or take to Half Price Books to trade in.
For me, books that I am ready to part with are books that:
- I’ve read and did not love.
- Ended up as a DNF (and I have no desire to try and start it again).
- I re-read the synopsis and wondered why I even bought it in the first place
For that last point, I think at times I buy books thinking that I would like to be a person that reads that type of story. But I have found that I actually don’t like all genres. I do tend to HEAVILY favor fantasy and sci-fi (especially dystopian sci-fi and steampunk-style worlds). I do like general fiction, but even those books tend to have a specific lyrical quality that is almost like magic. And mysteries/thrillers are good but are hit-or-miss many times for me in terms of actually liking how the story plays out.
Oh, and books about books (especially books about books with magic in them) – those are some of my favorites.
And now that I read a lot more on an eReader, that is where I will go to try out new genres (or revisit genres if I want to try them out again). Between Kindle Unlimited and the library, that is where I go for new things. The books I buy and bring home, those are the ones I am starting to get a little more precious with.
It is nice to see my bookshelves cleaned up. With plenty of space for new acquisitions.
