The Path from Regret – I love a good fantasy quest. When multiple characters come together to help the ostensible hero vanquish a foe, find the princess, or save a kingdom. Or all of the above. This one was definitely a quest, but the hero was not like most heroes. And the supporting crew had its’ own unique issues.
A tale of a quest, that had multiple starting threads. Thorne is a mage tasked with tracking down another errant mage in an attempt to rectify some damage done on his part previously. This quest brings in a few mercenaries, one of which, Carlion, has a personal quest all his own to sort out.
Along the way, the band of wary associates comes across soldiers, raiders of a sort, and (as it often seems to be in fantasy quests), villains of a dubious nature trying to wield power in new and unseemly ways.
The crux of all of this is Thorne, and his reasons for embarking on this journey can read as a bit fragmented for much of the story until threads start coming together more towards the end. I liked the book, the world and magic system, but it also felt a bit unfinished. Like it was set up to be continued as a series. And while all of the characters held my interest, it also felt as if so much of their interactions were held at surface-level, and not deeply explored.
